Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience

5 June: World Environment Day

WEB Vienna, June 5, 2024 — Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1973, World Environment Day is the flagship United Nations event for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. This year's campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience under the slogan "Our land. Our home. Our future."

UNEP Exhibit at Vienna International Center

UNEP is hosting an exhibit at the Vienna International Center on 5 June to mark World Environment Day. The exhibit will showcase the importance of land restoration and highlight the work of UNEP and its partners in this area. Vienna schoolchildren will also have the opportunity to engage with land restoration experts and learn about the role they can play in protecting our planet.

Land restoration is the process of returning degraded land to a healthy and productive state. It can involve a variety of techniques, such as planting trees, managing grazing, and improving soil and water quality. Land restoration is essential for combating desertification, which is the process of land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas. Desertification is a major threat to human well-being, as it can lead to food insecurity, poverty, and displacement.

Drought is another major environmental challenge that can have a devastating impact on human and animal life. Drought occurs when there is a lack of water for an extended period of time. Droughts can cause crop failures, livestock deaths, and water shortages. They can also lead to wildfires, dust storms, and other environmental hazards.

Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience are all interconnected issues that require urgent action. By taking steps to restore degraded land, we can help to combat desertification and drought, and improve the lives of people around the world.
